No Correlation Between Traffic and Comments

Comments and traffic. Traffic and comments.

Two things about which clients talk to me a lot. They keep thinking that if they can just get enough traffic and their blog, then they’ll get a lot of comments around which to build that all-important conversation they seek.

I’m here to say the two just aren’t related.

At work I recently completed a study, the upshot of which is this. We looked at some highly trafficked blogs and some low trafficked blogs. Counted the comments on each and then correlated the number of comments to the blog’s Alexa and Technorati ratings. Guess what?

No statistical correlation.

I.e., high traffic doesn’t create “tons”of comments. Yikes. Like it or not.
