A Sobering Social Media Statistic

Yesterday, I was reading about a study done by Simmons Research wherein they cited that “Upscale Grays” are almost 40% less likely than the average person to visit a blog or a chat room, or to use instant messaging. An upscale gray is defined as 50 plus with over $100,000 in annual household income. Ouch.

The study also cited that this same demographic group is almost 70% less likely than average to visit a social network site. Yeah. Almost intuitive knowledge. But double ouch. That leaves out a very sizable and desirable demographic segment.

Now wonder social media is going through fits and starts in the marketing world; it’s chasing Gen Xers and Gen Ys with no money.
